Shark Stratos Anti Hair Wrap Plus IZ420UKT: cleaning test
Cordless vacuums have become a popular tool for effectively combating household dust in most homes.
A powerful option for doing so is the new Shark hoover with the catchy name:
Shark Stratos Anti Hair Wrap Plus Pet Pro IZ420UKT. 😬
This is the model we’ve used for our tests, but the Stratos Cordless Range also includes two other models: the IZ400UK and the IZ400UKT.
The former does not include the Pet Tool that the rest of the range has, and neither come with a second battery like the IZ420UKT does.
Other than that, the cordless vacs don’t differ at all.
Of course, we know you’re eager to find out how well the Shark Stratos performs in cleaning sessions. So we won’t keep you in suspense for long.
How we test
A good cordless hoover should provide a deep clean on all surfaces. That's why we tested the Stratos on hard floors as well as low and high pile carpets. 🧐
We’ve also used it extensively on sofa upholstery.
And to make sure we got a good idea of the package as a whole, we also put the included dusting accessories to the test by dusting our cupboards.
But for now, let’s go one step at a time.
Cleaning on hard floor
To test how well the Shark cordless hoover does on hard floors, we spread a good amount of oats, lentils and sand on laminate flooring.
Then the Shark came out to play.
And indeed, the vacuum cleaner didn’t leave a crumb behind.
Even along the corners and edges, it was able to come up with an A+ cleaning result. 😸

Cleaning on short pile carpet
The next step was to get to grips with the short pile carpet without having to change the floor brush.
On short-pile carpet, the Shark was able to handle any kind of dirt with ease.
All that remained was a clean, crumb-free carpet. What more could you want?

Cleaning on long pile carpet
Now we come to the most important topic for every (cordless) vacuum: the high-pile carpet.
The Shark Stratos had no problems whatsoever with this type of surface (which many vacuum cleaners have a hard time with).
It reliably removed all dirt from the carpet fibres. It was also able to pick up larger pieces of dirt without any problem. 🎊

Cleaning sofa cushions
We used the Stratos with both the narrow crevice tool and the multi-surface tool to thoroughly remove hair, dust and dander from sofa upholstery.
We used the first attachment to tackle the sofa nooks and crannies and the brush to go over the sofa surfaces.
We have nothing negative to report about this cleaning step, either. The mini electric brush does what it is supposed to do and frees upholstery from lint and crumbs.
It is also a real game changer in tackling animal hair.
Dusting with the Shark Stratos
After cleaning with the Shark Stratos anti-allergen dusting brush, our cupboards are now also free from dust. 🎉
Dusting with this handheld device is definitely more fun than with a cloth or feather duster. This is because the Shark sucks up the dust directly, whereas with other alternatives it usually ends up on the floor or somewhere else first.
How does the Stratos clean corners and edges?

Design review of the Shark Stratos Anti Hair Wrap Plus IZ420UKT
When reviewing a cordless vacuum, the design should not be ignored. After all, it also has a lot of influence on how well the device can be handled.
That is why we would like to take a closer look at size, weight and other appearance features. 👇
First impression
The design is best described as futuristic.
At least in terms of appearance, Shark devices are easily comparable with Dyson.
Which is better: Shark or Dyson?
This question is not so easy to answer. There are very powerful and efficient models from both brands.
However, Dyson is undoubtedly a premium brand. This means that in many areas, other brands can’t hold a candle to it. Accordingly, their products are also expensive.
The Shark Stratos comes very close to the current Dyson models in terms of cleaning performance. However, you have to live without features like an innovative high-tech display.
Shark cordless hoovers are a good choice if you are looking for a reasonably priced device that is still impressive with very good performance.

The look of the Stratos IZ420UKT is, of course, a matter of taste. In general, it isn’t the number one factor when shopping for a cordless vacuum cleaner.
Size and weight
The dimensions of a cordless hoover are somewhat more important. After all, being able to easily manoeuvre it around your furniture is a pretty crucial factor. And you’ll also want to be able to clean hard-to-reach places with it.
The Shark Stratos is 114 cm in height. It weighs about 4 kilograms.
Even though the weight of Shark Stratos cordless vacuums is often criticised, we didn't find it too heavy.
It was also comfortable to hold. Both as a stick hoover and as a hand hoover, we had no problems reaching any areas. 👏
Quality and workmanship
There is really nothing to complain about in terms of the quality of the Shark Stratos. This is noticeable from the very first time you set up the unit. 💥
The click mechanism when putting the parts together works like a charm.
Everything snaps into place with ease and can be removed just as easily.
The dust container can be removed at the touch of a button, and so can the battery, which is located under the handle.
Display
The Shark Stratos LED smart display is not on the same playing field as the high-tech versions currently offered by some other cordless vacuum brands.
It is attached to the handle and only displays the following parameters:
- Remaining battery life in percent
- Power mode
As such, the screen is small and simple.
Conclusion: Not a high-tech display, but does the job. Strictly speaking, the two most important categories are covered. 👍

Accessories: Here's what’s included with a Shark Stratos IZ420UKT
What you get when you buy a cordless hoover depends on the brand and model.
Of course, it’s always good to receive a comprehensive set of accessories as part of your order. But you often have to dig a bit deeper into your pocket for that.
Shark does not offer a huge accessory package for the Stratos Anti Hair Wrap, but generally everything you need is included.
So let's take a closer look at the accessories. 👇
Batteries with charger
The Shark Stratos IZ420UKT includes two powerful batteries.
In eco power mode, you can vacuum for up to 60 minutes.
In car mode, you’ll get 40 to 45 minutes from it.
This time alone should be enough for most people to completely vacuum their flat or house.
But since a second battery is also included, you can even double the cleaning time.
We were also enthusiastic about the charging station. You can use it to charge both batteries independently of the device.
There are practical rubber studs on the underside to prevent it from slipping. 🌟
Of course, you can also charge the batteries directly in the hoover.
The charging time is around 3.5 hours.
DuoClean floorhead
The floor head on the Shark Stratos is also a real showstopper. It's called DuoClean.
What’s special about it is that it’s equipped with two different brush rollers:
- one soft roller for hard floors at the front
- a hard roller for carpets at the rear
We haven’t come across any other brand that offers a 2-in-1 brush like this on its cordless hoovers. Normally, you can only use one of the two options at a time, and if you want to switch, you have to swap them out.
So with the DuoClean floorhead, Shark has really gone the extra mile. 💯
The back brush is equipped with an anti-tangle function called Anti Hair Wrap for unrivalled hair pick-up.
The anti-hair-wrap technology ensures that long hairs are combed out before they can get caught up in the roller.
However, there is one drawback with the Shark Stratos floor head: It is quite heavy, which makes vacuuming stairs, for example, a bit trickier.
Pet Tool
The mini electric brush, called the Motorised Pet Tool, is especially practical if you are a pet owner. This pet hair attachment can be used to remove hair, dust and dirt from both mattresses and upholstered furniture. 💫
You can also use the normal upholstery nozzle, but of course, you’ll get more out of the motorised attachment.

Just like the large floor brush, the mini version also has an anti-tangle function.
You can also remove and clean the motorised brush roll easily.
Multi-surface tool
In addition to the motorised mini brush, there is also a normal multi-surface brush for sofas, car seats and other upholstered furniture.
There are two different attachments, one with softer and one with harder bristles. So you have the right brush for every type of upholstery. 🔥
Crevice tool
Of course, no (cordless) hoover should be missing a good crevice nozzle. They are ideal for vacuuming corners, skirting boards or even couch crevices.
The Shark Stratos IZ420UKT also comes with one. There is actually nothing special to report about it. But it certainly does what it is supposed to do.
Anti-Allergen Brush
The Anti-Allergen dusting brush takes care of shelf and cupboard dusting.
Soft, gentle bristles pick up dust, which is then vacuumed up. A felt lining helps to lift extra fine dust without causing unsightly scratches. 🤓
Flexology Wand
The Flexology vacuum wand is, as the name suggests, very flexible.
We have already mentioned that the wand bends so it can be easily folded for freestanding storage.
Another big advantage of the bendable wand is that you can also vacuum under furniture without risking back pain. Bending down is rarely necessary.

Cleaning features of the Shark Stratos Cordless Vacuum
A cordless vacuum naturally needs decent suction power. But by no means is that all that matters. The coordination of multiple cleaning features plays a vital role in the quality of a cordless vacuum cleaner.
So let's take a look at how well the Shark Stratos does in this area. 👇
How powerful is the Shark Stratos suction?
According to the manufacturer, the Shark Stratos has 80 watts of suction power.
However, the number of watts alone basically says nothing about the performance of a hoover. It simply refers to the power consumption of the motor.
With a (rechargeable) hoover, it is therefore always worth looking at the entire package. 💁
Does the wattage limit also apply to cordless hoovers in the UK?
For a while, it seemed as if hoover manufacturers were constantly trying to outdo each other with the wattage of their appliances. So wattage kept rising.
In September 2014, the EU introduced a regulation to reduce the power of hoovers in order to reduce energy consumption. Since 2017, corded hoovers are only allowed to have a maximum of 900 watts. Despite Brexit, this restriction continues to apply in the UK.
In any case, this regulation does not apply to cordless hoovers. Wattage for these devices is usually far below that of normal corded hoovers. However, this does not mean that their overall suction power is inferior.
Double power thanks to DuoClean floorhead
We have already described the DuoClean Anti Hair Wrap floor head in detail in the accessories chapter.
It definitely plays a big role in the Shark Stratos' powerful performance on all types of surfaces. Thanks to the two different rollers, it copes perfectly with both hardwood and carpet flooring. It also offers twice the cleaning power.
The floor brush is also equipped with LED headlights. So you can generally see the dust better and you’ll know where you still have to vacuum, even in dimly-lit corners.
Different power modes
The Shark Stratos has three different power modes: 👇
- the automatic mode, called Clean Sense IQ by Shark
- Eco mode
- Boost mode
In eco mode, the Shark's suction power is not quite as strong, but less power is consumed.
The boost mode is ideal for stubborn dirt, as it uses the highest suction power.
The most interesting is probably the automatic mode, which the brand calls "Clean Sense IQ". In this cleaning programme, the hoover detects dirt that is invisible even to you thanks to sensors. The Shark Stratos will automatically adjust its suction power accordingly. 😎
This results in up to 50% more dirt pick-up, according to Shark.

Anti-Odour Technology
A new feature for Shark cordless vacuums is the addition of anti-odour technology in the Stratos range.
You just pop an anti-odour cartridge into the dust bin, which will prevent nasty odours caused by pet hair and other dirt from being released into your home.
The cartridge releases a pleasant “Ocean Breeze” scent to mask any offending odours.

Powerful batteries
Another factor that contributes to the Shark Stratos IZ420UKT scoring so well in our cleaning tests is the dual battery.
That is a long time in itself for normal-sized flats or houses. Once you have charged both batteries, you can use the other one in no time. Which adds another 45 minutes to your cleaning time. 🤗
So you get a total of around 90 minutes of runtime. In eco-mode, this can even be extended to 120 minutes.
We can’t imagine there’s anyone who needs more time than that to clean their home.
Easily switch from stick to handheld
The Shark Stratos is a 2-in-1 cordless vacuum. This means that you can use it normally as a stick hoover for vacuuming floors, but you can also convert it into a handheld hoover. And the Stratos makes this really quick and easy. 😌
The Stratos also delivers top-class performance in handheld mode. It's not too heavy and quite compact, so vacuuming out your car, for example, is a breeze.

What filters does the Shark Stratos have?
The Shark Stratos dust bin is equipped with two filters, but unfortunately there are no HEPA filters to be found. Which means we have to dock some points here. 😔
What is a HEPA filter?
HEPA filters are currently the Rolls-Royce of the filter market. Unlike others, they filter 99.9% of particles. They safely trap not only dust, but also chemicals, allergens, viruses and bacteria.
For this reason, they are a real relief for allergy sufferers in particular because they can reduce their discomfort.
In addition, air purifiers with HEPA filters also supposedly protect against virus-carrying aerosols. This is why they are often used to prevent coronavirus in classrooms, etc.
Shark could clearly improve a little here. There are plenty of competitors in this price range that feature HEPA filters.
However, the Stratos comes with the Anti-Allergen Complete Seal. It is also supposed to safely absorb dust particles, irritants and allergens (99.9% of them) and trap them inside the vacuum. This is to prevent them from re-entering the air you breathe. 😊

Setup
You know when you want to assemble a new electrical appliance but have to get through 50 pages of assembly instructions first?
You won't have to worry about that with the Shark Stratos IZ420UKT.
Assembly is child's play and particularly self-explanatory.
If you do need help, there is of course also a detailed instruction manual. 😊
Make sure you also fully charge the batteries before using them for the first time.
Before you start vacuuming, the dust container, batteries and all other parts must be correctly inserted.
Setting up the Shark Stratos is a real piece of cake! 🍰
Handling and manoeuvrability
The handling is actually the same as the setup. Operating the Stratos is intuitive. The operating elements are easily accessible on the handle. 🙂
Removable parts can be easily detached and reattached. Everything works smoothly.
Furthermore, the Shark vacuum cleaner is easy to manoeuvre around furniture and glides easily over the floor. This is mainly due to the two rollers on the left and right of the floor head and the movable joint.
So we didn't find anything wrong with the handling either. 🥳
Can you vacuum under furniture with the Shark Stratos IZ420UKT?
Of course, this depends primarily on the height of the furniture. If your furniture leaves hardly any space below it, the Stratos more than likely won’t be able to clean under there.
But if the floor nozzle can comfortably get under the furniture, the Flexology technology allows you to easily clean underneath.
So no need to crouch in front of sofas and cupboards or even crawl around on the floor.

Volume test of the Shark Stratos IZ420UKT
Of course, we also wanted to know how loud the Shark Stratos is. After all, some hoovers can have an extremely unpleasant noise level and frequency. 😑
So we measured the volume and got results between 72 and 78 decibels.
Depending on the mode and the type of floor you vacuum, the volume varies. In Boost mode, the Shark is naturally louder than in Eco mode.
However, it is fair to say that the Shark Stratos isn’t exactly one of the quietest models. However, we did not find the vacuuming noise to be particularly unpleasant either.

Maintenance and care of the Shark Stratos Anti Hair Wrap
The Shark Stratos IZ420UKT is very easy to look after. It really doesn't take much to keep it in good shape. 🤩
However, thorough cleaning is still recommended from time to time.
Empty and clean the dust bin
Firstly, it’s important to empty the dust container regularly. Otherwise, the vacuum cleaner will eventually fill up and no longer be able to pick up dirt.
You should also rinse the container with water from time to time.
Cleaning the brushes
If too much hair and fluff has tangled itself around the brush rollers, it can decrease your vacuum’s suction power. This can happen from time to time despite the anti-tangle function. 🤷
If necessary, you can then easily remove the rollers on the Shark Stratos to thoroughly rid them of any dirt.
Of course, the same applies to the upholstery nozzle.
You can either do this by hand or take a small knife and carefully cut the matted hair loose.
Filter maintenance
As previously mentioned, the Shark Stratos IZ420UKT unfortunately does not have a HEPA filter. Instead, the unit has two normal filters.
It’s enough to simply check these filters for damage etc. at regular intervals and knock the dust out occasionally.

Does the Shark Stratos come with a warranty?
Shark offers a 12-month guarantee on its hoovers.
But that's not all. If you register your device on the website after purchase, you’ll get an extended warranty totalling 5 years.
During this period, you can have repairs carried out on your device free of charge via Shark. However, this does not apply to the replacement of wearing parts. The warranty is also void in the event of improper handling of the cordless vacuum cleaner.

Shark Stratos IZ420UKT Price
At around £550 RRP, the Shark Stratos is not necessarily a bargain. In terms of price, it sits around the lower end of the premium sector.
But even if the purchase costs are not exactly low, the follow-up costs for maintenance and care are very limited with this device. 🙏
For one thing, the Shark Stratos is a durable quality product. For another, you don't have to spend money on dust bags because the device is bagless.
So even though the Shark Stratos Anti Hair Wrap Plus is not exactly cheap, it is still cheaper than its competitors from Dyson. But its display isn’t as modern and it doesn’t come with as many accessories.
All in all, it has to be said that you get good quality at a fair price with the Shark Stratos. 😄

Do we recommend buying the Shark Stratos Anti Hair Wrap Plus Pet Pro IZ42UKT - Our verdict
(Cordless) hoovers from Shark are breaking new ground. The brand doesn’t shy away from problematic areas that are often ignored by other suppliers.
For example, we find the dual floor head for hard floors and carpets particularly innovative.
The attention to detail shown by the brand in the design of the Stratos is what really impressed us here. We love that you can charge both batteries at the same time in the docking station without the vacuum itself.
In the cleaning test, the Shark Stratos Anti Hair Wrap Plus impressed us from start to finish. 😃
The hinged wand ensures that even hard-to-reach places finally become dust-free again.
What we find a bit unfortunate is that it does not have a HEPA filter. We cannot fully attest to whether the anti-allergen Complete Seal is really comparable to it in our tests.
If you are looking for a cordless hoover that can at least keep up with the top dogs in terms of dirt pick-up, the Shark Stratos is your best bet.
